Where to mountain bike in North Carolina?
With a plethora of forests, local bike shops, events and races there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the local bike scene.
Biking Dupont State Forest
DuPont State Recreational Forest is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Hendersonville and Brevard, North Carolina. With 10,400 acres of forest and four major waterfalls this place is a gem offering mountain bikers nearly 100 miles of varied trails. Check out The Mountain Bike Project for more information. Although nearby Pisgah National Forest has long been recognized as Transylvania’s go-to for mountain biking, DuPont is quickly building its own reputation as a premier mountain biking destination.
Biking Pisah National Forest
The Pisgah National Forest is renowned as the premiere mountain bike destination in the Southeastern US, and is possibly one of the best mountain bike destinations the world over. Pisgah National Forest includes 500,000+ acres surrounding Asheville, North Carolina with some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain scenery in the Appalachians. This area also boasts some of the best recreational opportunities in eastern North America. The Pisgah National Forest covers much of the north and central western mountains of North Carolina providing visitors opportunities to explore whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails. Local Bike Shops
For local bike shops check out Sycamore Cycles and grab a coffee as well at Crank Coffee which is in the same building. Try the “cup of crank”! From their site: “Sycamore Cycles started in 2000, in Downtown Brevard, NC. It is a true labor of love for our family. Bikes are cool, and we are so pumped to be able to share our love of bikes with y’all… Oh, by the way, we are from the south. With a house full of bike nerds, we are here to get you and your bike dialed. We hope you enjoy Western North Carolina as much as we do! That is why we call it home.”
Another notable local bike shop is The Hub and Pisgah Tavern and grab a beer as well at Pisgah Tavern! Typically food trucks there depending on the time of year. From their site: “Conveniently located at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, The Hub sits at the epicenter of adventure in the region. Right out our backdoor the forests offer up vast amounts of both epic and family friendly mountain biking trails, miles and miles of solitude and waterfall by foot, more vertical pursuits up ultra classic eyebrow laden southeast granite and an endless network of rivers and streams to either chase native trout or just cool your bones after a days adventure.”
